Meditation: How to Enter the Alpha Level of Your Mind

A while back we went through a basic relaxation technique for meditation and visualization, mostly based on Shakti Gawain's method. Today I want to go back to these meditation techniques and talk about a different way to reach the same goal: Jose Silva's technique of entering the Alpha level of your mind

The Silva method is slightly more technical and goal-oriented than the relaxation method proposed by Shakti, so this is a great approach for a beginner. Let's see what it is all about.

What is Alpha and Why Do We Want To Go There?

Our brain has several wave patterns, electrical impulses sent out on certain frequencies. These frequencies are measured by an EEG in cycles per second. The frequency about 14 cycles/sec. and up are called Beta waves; about 7 to 14 are Alpha; 4 to7 Theta; and 4 and below are Delta. These patterns have been extensively studied by science (Jose Silva himself played an important part in this valuable research) because of their mind-blowing effect on our mind and consciousness.

When you are wide awake doing your normal daily routines, your mind is in Beta, or "outer consciousness" as mind control practitioners call it. When you are daydreaming, about to fall asleep or amost waking up, you are in Alpha. Silva calls this state "timer consciousness." When you are asleep you are either in Alpha, Theta, or Delta (depending on how profound your sleep is).

When you meditate, you want to open your mind to the endless possibilities not normally available to you in beta state. Alpha is the frequency where your mind awakens its hidden senses. Reaching this level is an end in itself, because it clears the mind of all conscious thought, allowing you to experience reality in a direct, intuitive and profound way.

The Morning Routine

According to the Silva method, the easiest time to reach Alpha is in the morning, right after you regain your consciousness. Immediately after you feel awake (make sure you are awake though), with your eyes closed, look slightly upward at an angle of approximately 20 degrees. This position of the eyes tells your brain to produce alpha waves.

Now start counting from 100 to 0, slowly, at about 2 seconds intervals. Make sure you're still awake and your mind is focused on the counting (otherwise you lose the element of "control"). When you're done counting, you're in alpha.

Jose Silva advises to use the hundred-to-one counting method for ten mornings. Then count only from fifty to one, twenty-five to one, then ten to one, and finally five to one, ten mornings each.

Coming Out of Alpha

The mind control method is to say mentally:

"I will slowly come out as I count from one to five, feeling wide awake and better than before. One-two—prepare to open your eyes—three—-open eyes —four—five—eyes open, wide awake, feeling better than before."

The Standard Routine (anytime during the day)

Sit in a comfortable chair or on a bed with your feet flat on the floor. Let your hands lie loosely in your lap. If you prefer, sit cross-legged, in the lotus position. Hold your head well balanced, not slumped. 

Now concentrate on first one part of the body, then another, to consciously relax it. Start with your left foot, then the left leg, then the right foot, and so on, until you reach the throat, the face, the eyes, and finally the scalp. You will be amazed the first time you do this at how tense your body was.

Now pick a spot about 45 degrees above eye level on the ceiling or the wall opposite you. Gaze at this spot until your eyelids begin to feel a little heavy and let them close. Start your countdown from fifty to one. 

Do this for ten days, then ten to one for another ten days, then five to one from then on.

OK, I'm in Alpha. Now What?

Right from the beginning, from the very first moment you reach your meditative level, Jose Silva advises the practice of visualization. This is central to mind control. The better you learn to visualize, the more powerful will be your experience with mind control.
